The Vocational Agriculture Teachers Association of Texas (VATAT) has a unique internship opportunity available to junior, senior or graduate-level students interested in communications and event planning. This paid internship will focus on projects pertaining to the annual professional development conference for agriculture science teachers. Duties may include but are not limited to: exhibit show registration, tour/workshop registration, securing presenters and speakers, Web site maintenance, graphic design, press releases, database management, membership registration, and other duties as assigned.
Students interested in communications and other relevant majors are encouraged to apply. This is a very hands-on, project-based internship that requires attention to detail, customer service skills and professionalism. Skills in writing, editing and grammar are very helpful. SUMMER 2010 INTERNSHIP POSITION
The News and Information Branch of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is seeking a Media Relations Intern for Summer 2010. This position will provide hands-on experience in various facets of modern news media relations, including writing news releases, emailing and phoning reporters, updating the branch media database and monitoring and distributing newspaper clipping files. It will offer experience in the use of current media relations technology, including use of the IBM PC computer and various Web and software applications, such as MS Outlook, Word and more. Depending on the intern’s ability, they will likely depart with examples of stories placed as a result of news releases they wrote or distributed.
The length and hours for the position are negotiable. It would likely involve at least 10-15 hours per week, depending on the intern’s availability and desire to learn, and depending on available funding. Work schedules are often arranged to accommodate student class schedules. The intern would work at TPWD headquarters in southeast Austin. Candidates selected for interviews may be asked to conduct a timed news writing exercise. Good verbal and written communication skills are critical.
The internship pays $9-11 per hour depending on grade level and experience. Perhaps more important, it offers a chance to develop real-world skills through hands-on experience using the latest tools and technology. Candidates who have experience or course work in news reporting and writing using Associated Press style are strongly preferred.
To be considered for summer internships, students must meet these requirements:
- Undergraduate OR graduate college student enrolled in an accredited college or university at time of application.
- Minimum of 12 semester credit hours from an accredited college or university on transcripts.
- Must have an overall grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 or higher on a 4.0 grade point scale OR "Pass" on a Pass/Fail system.
- Must submit an Internship Application Form (PWD 068e) and Recruitment Activity Data Sheet (third page of Application form).
- Must submit an Authorization and Consent for Disclosure of Criminal History Information (PWD 1039) form.
- Attach official current transcript(s) to application (photocopy of official transcript is acceptable).
